The Atlas of the Conflict maps the processes and mechanisms behind the shaping of Israel-Palestine over the past 100 years. Over 500 maps and diagrams provide a detailed territorial analysis of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, explored through themes such as borders, settlements, land ownership, archaeological and cultural heritage sites, control of natural resources, landscaping, wars and treaties. A lexicon, drawing on many different information sources, provides a commentary on the conflict from various perspectives. As a whole, the book offers insights not only into the specific situation of Israel-Palestine, but also into the phenomenon of spatial planning used as a political instrument.

Atlas of Conflict over Israel en Palestina uitgeroepen tot mooiste boek ter wereld

In maart 2011 werd op de Leipziger Messe de prijs voor “het mooist ontworpen boek ter wereld” aan de “Atlas of Conflict” toegekend. Ontwerper Joost Grootens nam de prijs in ontvangst. Het boek brengt “structuur en licht in de chaos” aldus de jury in haar rapport.  De atlas werd gekozen uit bijna 600 inzendingen uit 32 landen.

Winnend boek leidt zelf tot conflict

Auteur Malkit Shoshan heeft geprobeerd langs juridische weg te voorkomen dat de prijs werd uitgereikt aan Joost Grootens. Shoshan: “Aan dit boek is 10 jaar gewerkt, ook door andere designers. Grootens heeft goed werk geleverd, maar 80 procent van het boek was al klaar toen hij er mee aan het werk ging”. Grootens vind de situatie vervelend, maar zegt dat het hier om een designprijs gaat en hij  de ontwerper van het boek is.
